What do People Associate with You?
Lets define something real quick. What is a Personal Brand?
People like to come up with all kinds of fancy lines and words that don't give us much to action on:
its the feeling that someone gives you
its what people think about you when the ad is over
its the content you make
While all these have elements of truth it doesnt give us much on what we can actually action to achieve a Personal Brand.
Here is my definition:
A Personal Brand is the association of you with a specific outcome, style and story.
So what's the action here?
Using your product/ service, content, marketing and in person interactions, associate yourself with a specific outcome, style and story.
Lets do some easy examples.
Michael Jordan:
outcome - put ball in hoop real good
style - high flying athleticism with precise technical skill. oversized '90s tailoring, relaxed streetwear, and luxury sportswear
story - working class coloured family to world wide basketball superstar
Steve Jobs:
outcome - incredible product design
style - simple, clean integration of hardware and software
story - fired by the company he built in a garage to returning and transforming it into the world's most valuable technology empire
Beyoncé
outcome – flawless RnB pop performances that set the standard for modern pop
style – high-glam, Black Southern culture
story – label-controlled group member to fully independent icon
So for every decision I make when working on my products, content and marketing I run them through the lens of, 'is this what i want my audience to associate with me'.
This might sound simple (because it is) but I see many people blindly making content and marketing without running it through this lens first.
